The English and Wales Placed Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a group once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the pools conclude according to the current world rankings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match aimed at launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
