The Boss Maresca Describes Lead-Up Period as His 'Worst 48 Hours' with the Club

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the preparation to Saturday's triumph against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced with the London club.

The 44-year-old delivered a puzzling message in his after-game media briefing despite earning a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge courtesy of finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those crucial points sent Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, potentially improving the atmosphere after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the team's drought without a win to consecutive fixtures.

Yet, when questioned about Gusto's contribution and overall performance, Maresca unexpectedly divulged his frustration over the previous 48-hour period within the organization.

"The way the lads want to improve has been fantastic and this is the reason why I commend them - because with numerous challenges, they are performing admirably after a difficult week," he said.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst because many people withheld support from us."

Pressed on the specifics, the former Leicester City boss continued: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When questioned if he meant people within at Chelsea, he answered: "In general. In general," before specifying when asked if it was aimed at supporters or the media: "I adore the fans and we are extremely content with the fans."

Injury & Disciplinary Woes

Maresca also highlighted Chelsea's persistent injury and suspension issues, noting they had been without key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, as well as losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and striker Liam Delap to two significant injuries.

"I truly applaud the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are doing exceptionally. Today was five games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer playing, we said many times that he's our top player but we play almost all season minus our top player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to appreciate because the work from the players is outstanding."

Chelsea's success over Everton consolidated their standing in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.

Uncertainty Regarding Maresca's Remark

It was not immediately clear what exactly caused Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the worst of his time as Chelsea head coach.

In that period, the coach had returned with his backroom team and players from his native Italy, held a session at the training ground, faced a pre-game press briefing where he seemed at ease, and secured a win over an high-flying Everton side.

It was not obvious whether any specific media reports had irked him, if online discourse played a role, or if it was something deeper from within the club at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to deny that it was an matter related to the club's supporters, a section of which have still have yet to fully embrace him since his appointment from Leicester during July 2024.
