New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
